Raku Firing (Members Only)

Service Description

This workshop is for members only! The base cost is $40, plus there will be a charge of $0.10 per cubic inch, to be paid after the firing is complete the same way you pay for your usual firing. We will run a bisque June 24th so make sure your pots are dry by then. We will have raku clay available, and you can buy it by the pound instead of by the usual 25 lb bag. You can pay for it on our website the same way you do other clay and firing fees. You can use our regular clay but the raku will likely have better glaze results and will be less likely to crack. Please note that raku fired clay is not vitrified (is not water tight) so is best for flower pots and decorative pieces or some people use a plastic liner inside vases. Also note that consistent thickness and properly attaching joints are extra important in raku firing due to the stress of thermal shock. We will fire 2 larger or 3 smaller pots per person. Short and narrow vessels are preferred as flatter vessels take up more space and our space is more limited than in a usual firing. We ask that you sign up before June 1st so we know if we should open it up to the general public or if we will have enough people participating from our studio alone. If you'd like to have your things fired but are unable to attend the workshop. you can simply glaze your raku pieces and leave them at the studio for us to fire! Just sign up and let us know you won't be there. There is a lot of down time during the workshop, so we will also have a potluck style lunch, please bring something to share!
